More details about Marvin Austin, Dareus’ buddy… There hasn’t been much information lately concerning Marcell Dareus and his status going into the University of Alabama’s 2010 football season. Dareus is practicing with the Crimson Tide and head coach Nick Saban says that there will be no announcement concerning an NCAA probe into possible agent contact until a final ruling has been reached. But more details are coming into focus about Marvin Austin, the North Carolina player who reportedly paid for Dareus to fly to Miami and party in May. Yahoo Sports, which played a key role in unearthing information about Reggie Bush, has a very interesting story about Austin, his UNC position coach John Blake and agent Gary Wichard. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ys-agentcoach080910 It would be premature in the extreme to speculate on any outcome from this, but the Blake involvement, if proven, would be a big compliance problem for North Carolina. It’s the wrong issue at the wrong time, in the wake of the USC case and the current tide of displeasure with certain agents. The NCAA cannot control the agents but they can definitely have a big impact on assistant football coaches — and football programs. Will any of this affect Dareus? Perhaps not, if his contact with Austin was limited. But it does bring new and vivid detail to just what the NCAA is looking for. Read more →
