Don’t you love being right? Sometimes it just feels good to be right, heck-who am I kidding? It feels GREAT to be right! I was looking back through the columns that I wrote for www.lindyssports.com and I found this BEAUT from September of 2008. Enjoy! They called it upset weekend, just another weekend in major college football. Well, let me rephrase that…..I TOLD YOU SO!!!! It’s not often as a sports journalist that I get it right in such a big way. But wait, I digress. Last week, and heck, even before the UGA/UA game I started to have a feeling about the Alabama Crimson Tide. I knew this team was something special and my admiration did not wane after the Tulane game. And my feelings were justified after Tulane played ECU. I also had this same feeling, but in a very different manner, about the USC Trojans. Alabama and Southern California: two teams that produce very strong opinions from supporters and detractors. Two schools that people rarely feel “on the fence” about. Most of the time, people either love them or hate them. Mostly for the dominance that USC displays now, and for what Alabama represented in the past under Bear Bryant and company. I refuse to be a journalist that jumps on a bandwagon that a fan is riding (bama’s back) but I will however sing the praises of one Nick Saban. It has been a long time since I have seen a Coach take over a program and have the kind of success that he is having at present. And before you say, “well Rachel, Coaches do it all the time…just look at Urban Meyer and Terry Bowden and Larry Coker.” The kind of success I am referring to goes beyond wins and losses. It is the kind of success that you eat, live and breathe. It is buying into what your Coach says and believing that every word out of his mouth is gospel. It is knowledge that if he changes your position or even benches you, he has the team’s best interest at heart and you better, too, if you plan on sticking around. It [...] Read more →
Daybreak with recruit Brian Vogler Rachel spends the morning with Alabama football signee Brian Vogler. Read more →
Good morning from Columbus, Ga. Hello to my TSE brethren, I am coming to you from the Brookstone library where we are anxiously awaiting the signing of Brian Vogler. Steve and I spent some time with him this morning at his home. I would be hard pressed to find nicer people and the pigs in a blanket didn’t hurt either. More than 40 schools recruited Brian and the process was overwhelming at times, but he is still as grounded as they come. His family is all Gator fans but they have absolutely no qualms about sending their son to Alabama. Apparently Nick Saban made quite an impression on the entire family. I spoke with his head coach this morning as well, and he will be personally training Brian until he heads off to Tuscaloosa. Brian is a star basketball player also, so there are things that he needs to work on before taking his game to the next level as a tight end. Coach Harrison said he will particularly work on Brian’s core strength and flexibility. I’ll check in later in the day as we wrap up signing day from Columbus and head to Opelika for the signing of Corey Grant. Rachel Baribeau Read more →
